Artificial intelligence has changed how entrepreneurs work, and there is no denying its impact on small businesses. New tools seem to appear every week, promising to write content, automate customer service, manage projects, organize data, and even make business decisions. 

As someone who has spent more than two decades supporting entrepreneurs behind the scenes, I can honestly say I love many of these tools. AI has become part of my daily workflow because it helps me work more efficiently and spend less time on repetitive tasks. It gives me more time to focus on what truly moves my clients’ businesses forward.

What AI hasn’t changed is the value of experience.

The conversations I have with clients today are remarkably similar to the ones I had ten or fifteen years ago. 

  • They still feel overwhelmed. 
  • They still struggle to decide what deserves their attention first. 
  • They still have too many ideas and not enough time to implement them. 

While the technology has evolved, the challenges of running a business remain surprisingly consistent. That is why I believe experience has become even more valuable in an AI-driven world. Technology can provide answers, but it cannot replace the judgment that comes from years of solving real business problems.

Technology Will Continue to Change

When I started working as a Virtual Assistant, the business world looked very different.

  • Social media was in its infancy.
  • Cloud-based software was almost unheard of.
  • Video meetings weren’t an everyday occurrence.
  • Many of the tools entrepreneurs rely on today didn’t even exist.

Since then, I’ve watched platforms come and go, marketing trends rise and fall, and countless software programs promise to revolutionize the way businesses operate.

Every few years, there is another “next big thing.” Some innovations genuinely improve the way we work. Others disappear almost as quickly as they arrive. AI is different because it is already transforming many aspects of business, and I believe it will continue to do so. But despite all the changes I’ve witnessed throughout my career, one thing has remained constant. Successful business owners still need trusted people who can think critically, solve problems, and help them navigate uncertainty.

Experience teaches you not to become attached to a particular tool. Instead, you learn how to adapt. When software changes, you learn something new. When a process stops working, you improve it. When a client faces a challenge you’ve never seen before, you draw from years of similar situations to find a practical solution. Those skills don’t become outdated simply because technology advances.

AI Can Produce Information. Experience Provides Judgment.

One of the biggest misconceptions about AI is that having access to information is the same as having wisdom. AI can generate impressive content in seconds. It can summarize articles, draft emails, brainstorm marketing ideas, and answer questions almost instantly. Those capabilities are incredibly useful, and I use them regularly.

But information alone doesn’t make good business decisions.

One of the greatest advantages of experience is knowing what questions to ask before making a recommendation.

Sometimes the obvious solution isn’t the best one.

Sometimes the fastest approach creates more work later.

Sometimes the issue a client thinks they’re facing isn’t actually the real problem.

Over the years, I’ve worked with business owners who believed they needed a new CRM, a more complicated marketing funnel, or another piece of software. After talking through their situation, we often discovered they didn’t need another tool at all. They needed a simpler process, better organization, or clearer priorities. That kind of insight doesn’t come from technology. It comes from seeing similar situations play out over and over again with real businesses.

Relationships Have Always Been My Greatest Asset

One of the things I value most about my business is the relationships I’ve built with my clients. Many of them have trusted me for years. That trust wasn’t built because I knew how to use a particular software program or because I could complete a task quickly. It was built because they knew I cared about their business as much as they did.

When you’ve worked alongside someone long enough, you begin to understand how they think. You know their priorities, their communication style, and the goals they’re working toward. You notice when something seems out of place because you’re familiar with the rhythm of their business. Often, I can anticipate a client’s needs before they even ask because I’ve seen similar situations before.

That kind of partnership cannot be automated. AI can answer questions, but it doesn’t know the history behind every decision a client has made. It doesn’t understand the lessons learned from previous launches, the challenges of balancing family and business, or the unique personality that makes every entrepreneur different. Those are things that develop through human relationships built over time.

Experience Brings Calm When Things Go Wrong

One lesson I’ve learned is that something will always go wrong eventually. 

  • A website will stop working just before a launch. 
  • An email won’t send correctly. 
  • A payment system will have an unexpected issue. 
  • A vendor will miss a deadline. 
  • Technology will fail at the worst possible moment.

The difference isn’t whether problems happen. It’s how you respond when they do.

Experience teaches you not to panic. Instead of focusing on the problem, you immediately begin thinking about solutions. You know that every challenge has options, even if none of them are perfect. You also understand that staying calm helps everyone else stay calm.

I’ve been through enough launches, events, promotions, and client projects to know that flexibility is often more important than perfection. Business owners don’t need someone who freezes when plans change. They need someone who can adjust, communicate clearly, and keep moving forward. That confidence comes from having solved hundreds of problems over the years, not from reading instructions or watching tutorials.

The Best Results Come From Combining AI With Experience

I don’t believe AI is replacing experienced professionals. It’s making experienced professionals even more effective.

Today, I can use AI to organize information, brainstorm ideas, summarize research, or create a starting point for content much faster than I could a few years ago. That means I spend less time staring at a blank page or sorting through endless information. Instead, I can devote more time to strategy, client communication, and the thoughtful decisions that require human judgment.

The key is remembering that AI is a tool, not a replacement for experience. It still needs someone to evaluate the results, recognize what meets the client’s goals, and make adjustments based on real-world knowledge. Left on its own, AI may produce something technically correct but completely inappropriate for a specific business. That’s where experience becomes invaluable. It bridges the gap between information and application.

Why Human Connection Still Wins

At its core, business has always been about people.

People buy from businesses they trust.

They recommend professionals who consistently deliver on their promises.

They stay loyal to those who understand their goals and genuinely care about their success.

That hasn’t changed because of AI.

In fact, I believe human connection is becoming more valuable as technology becomes more common. When so much content is automatically generated and so many interactions are handled by software, authentic relationships stand out even more. Business owners are looking for people they can rely on, people who communicate honestly, think independently, and bring stability to their business.

That is what I’ve worked to build throughout my career. My clients know I’m not just completing tasks on a checklist. I’m paying attention to the details, looking for ways to improve systems, anticipating potential problems, and helping them make better decisions. Those are things that only grow stronger with experience.

Experience Is an Investment That Never Loses Value

The tools we use will continue to evolve. AI will become smarter, automation will become more sophisticated, and entrepreneurs will have access to technology that seems impossible today. I’m excited about those advancements because I believe they allow all of us to work more efficiently and spend more time doing meaningful work.

But no matter how advanced technology becomes, businesses will still need experienced people behind the scenes. They will still need trusted advisors, reliable partners, and professionals who understand that every business is unique. They will still need someone who can recognize when the obvious answer isn’t the right one and who can confidently guide them through change.

After more than 20 years as a Virtual Assistant, that’s the value I continue to bring to every client relationship. I embrace new technology because it makes my work better, but I never lose sight of what matters most. Experience, sound judgment, and genuine relationships have always been the foundation of successful businesses, and I believe they always will be.

In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, those human qualities aren’t becoming less important. They’re becoming the competitive advantage that businesses simply can’t automate.
