Why Another PDF Won't Solve Your Business Problem
As business owners, we’ve all done it.
We see a free checklist, guide, template, or worksheet that promises to solve a problem we’re facing. We download it with every intention of reading it later, then save it to our computer where it joins dozens, or even hundreds, of other resources we’ll probably never open again.
I know because I’ve done it myself.
For years, I also created those resources for my audience. I’ve written guides, worksheets, checklists, scorecards, and even an entire book. I enjoy creating educational content, and I know those resources can be valuable.
But over the past year, I started paying attention to something.
Very few people were downloading them.
At first, I wondered if I needed a different topic or a better title. Then I realized the problem wasn’t the content at all. The truth is that most entrepreneurs aren’t looking for another PDF to add to their collection. They’re looking for an answer to the one question that’s preventing them from moving forward today.
That realization changed how I think about helping business owners.
Sometimes You Don't Need More Information
Recently, one of my clients was updating a course in Kajabi.
She had uploaded files before, so this wasn’t new territory. However, Kajabi had made a small change to its interface. The upload process had moved just enough that she couldn’t figure out where to go next.
She spent time clicking through menus, trying different options, and becoming more frustrated by the minute. Because she isn’t particularly technical, what should have been a five-minute task turned into something that completely stalled her progress.
Finally, she reached out to me.
Within a few minutes, I was able to explain exactly what had changed and where she needed to click. She uploaded her file, updated her course, and moved on with the rest of her day.
That experience perfectly illustrates something I’ve learned after more than 20 years of supporting entrepreneurs.
She didn’t need another tutorial.
She didn’t need to search Google.
She didn’t need a twenty-page guide about Kajabi.
She simply needed someone who could answer one question.
The Biggest Roadblocks Are Often Small Ones
Many business owners assume they need a big solution when they’re stuck.
In reality, it’s often one unanswered question that’s holding everything up.
I’ve talked with entrepreneurs who spent hours researching software because they couldn’t decide which platform was right for their business. Others had years of valuable content sitting on their computers but had no idea how to organize it or reuse it. Some wondered whether it was finally time to hire a virtual assistant, while others weren’t sure what tasks they should delegate first.
These aren’t questions that require a lengthy course or another downloadable resource.
They require context.
They require someone who understands how businesses operate and can ask a few questions before recommending the next step.
That’s where experience makes all the difference.
Why Conversations Beat Checklists
There is certainly a place for guides, templates, and educational resources. I still believe they’re useful.
However, no checklist can ask follow-up questions.
A worksheet can’t tell you that you’re overcomplicating the problem.
A PDF doesn’t know your business, your goals, your budget, or your level of experience.
When someone asks me a question, I rarely jump straight to the answer.
Instead, I ask a few questions of my own. I want to understand what’s really causing the problem because the first question isn’t always the real question.
Once we identify what’s actually getting in the way, the solution usually becomes much clearer.
Many times, people have spent hours trying to figure something out on their own. After a short conversation, they have a clear direction and can finally finish what they started.
Helping someone move from feeling stuck to knowing exactly what to do next is one of my favorite parts of my work.
Why I Created Ask Karen
Those experiences are exactly why I created Ask Karen.
I didn’t want to create another free download that would end up sitting in someone’s Downloads folder.
I wanted to create a place where entrepreneurs could ask the question that’s keeping their business from moving forward.
- Maybe you’re wondering which platform you should use.
- Maybe you’re trying to organize years of content you’ve already created.
- Maybe you’re debating whether it’s time to hire a virtual assistant.
- Maybe you’re trying to figure out what you should delegate first.
Or maybe you’ve simply been staring at the same problem for hours and need someone with experience to point you in the right direction.
Those are the kinds of questions I love answering.
Sometimes all it takes is one conversation to save hours of frustration.
Why I Offer It for Free
People occasionally ask why Ask Karen is free.
The answer is simple.
I genuinely enjoy helping entrepreneurs solve problems.
Over the years, I’ve learned that most people don’t need someone to take over their entire business. They just need help getting past the obstacle that’s right in front of them.
If I can help someone save time, avoid unnecessary frustration, or move forward with confidence, that’s worthwhile.
It’s also a wonderful way for us to get to know each other. If we eventually work together, that’s great. If not, you’ve still received an answer that helped your business, and I’m happy about that.
Don't Let One Question Keep You Stuck
As entrepreneurs, we’re used to figuring things out ourselves. It’s one of the reasons we became business owners in the first place.
But there comes a point where spending another three hours searching online isn’t productive.
Sometimes the fastest path forward is simply asking someone who’s been there before.
If you have a question about systems, software, content organization, delegation, social media, virtual assistants, or another business challenge, don’t let it sit on your to-do list for another week.
Ask it.
You may find that the answer is much simpler than you expected.
If you’d like an experienced second opinion, visit the Ask Karen page and send me your biggest business question. I’d love to help you get unstuck so you can get back to growing your business.
