The Myth of Multitasking: Why Being a Jack of All Trades is a Recipe for Failure

myth of multitaskingAre you trying to learn everything about everything in your new business in an effort to save money? We live in a world that glorifies the myth of multitasking and trying to do it all, but what if I told you that this approach could actually be detrimental to your business growth? Sure, it’s tough to admit you need help but if you continue being everything to everyone, your business and YOU won’t survive or thrive! It’s just not sustainable. In this blog post, we will explore why trying to do it all can ruin your business and discuss some essential tips for startup success.

Why You Need to Choose a Niche.

One of the biggest misconceptions in business is that catering to a broad audience will bring in more customers and, therefore, more revenue. However, the truth is quite the opposite. By trying to appeal to everyone, you risk diluting your brand message and losing the attention of your target market. Choosing a niche allows you to focus your efforts, resources, and marketing strategies on a specific audience that is more likely to convert into loyal customers. Remember, it’s better to be a master of one niche than a jack of all trades.

When I was first starting my business I had a conversation with some colleagues about the importance of choosing a niche for your business rather than just saying, “I want to serve everybody.” Of course, you want to make money so instinctively business owners tell themselves that it’s better to appeal to more people than a selective few. But one astute entrepreneur responded by saying, “Do you want to be known as Walmart or do you want to be known as Gucci?”

The point is Walmart appeals to everyone but they depend on the sheer volume of customers to make their profit. Gucci, on the other hand, appeals to a very specific demographic which has the disposable income to spend and they don’t shirk at those retail prices. So Gucci can make the same profits as Walmart by serving a more selective customer base.

Both business models can be successful, but they require different approaches. Trying to emulate both Walmart and Gucci simultaneously is a recipe for disaster. Determine your brand identity and target market, and tailor your business strategy accordingly.

Why You Should Work with a Coach or Mentor.

A similar argument can be made for why you should work with a business coach: you can’t possibly know EVERYTHING there is to know about business as well as knowing everything about your chosen niche. There’s just not enough time in the day and you’d stretch yourself too thin. You are more focused on your business niche (rightfully so) and providing relevant services and products for your customers.

Whereas business coaches have a greater understanding of business practices overall and work with businesses in many different niches. If you’re trying to learn everything you can about efficient back-end processes, for example, you’re taking time away from your money-making marketing efforts to your niche customers, which could negatively affect your profits.

Working with a coach or mentor who has been through the challenges of starting and growing a business can provide invaluable guidance and support. A coach or mentor can offer fresh perspectives, help you set realistic goals, and hold you accountable for your progress. Don’t be afraid to seek help and leverage the experience of others who have walked the path before you. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Harness The Power of a Team of Advisors to Ditch the Myth of Multitasking

In addition to working with a coach or mentor, surrounding yourself with a team of advisors can further enhance your business success. Each advisor can bring a unique set of skills and expertise to the table, helping you make informed decisions in different aspects of your business. Whether it’s legal advice, financial planning, marketing strategies, or operations management, having a diverse team of advisors can provide you with a well-rounded perspective and mitigate risks. Remember, no successful business was built in isolation.

To illustrate this, think about large corporations. Does the company president know everything there is to know about the inner workings of the company and the daily processes? Probably not. Henry Ford nailed the concept of seeking help from others years ago as illustrated in this story:

During WW1 Henry Ford sued a Chicago newspaper for libeling him when they called him “an ignorant pacifist.”  At the ensuing trial, the defense lawyers grilled Mr. Ford with a line of questioning regarding general knowledge in an effort to prove to the jury that he was, as they said, ignorant.

Mr. Ford’s response, “If I should really want to answer the foolish question you have just asked, or any of the other questions you have been asking me, let me remind you that I have a row of electric push-buttons on my desk, and by pushing the right button, I can summon to my aid men who can answer any question I desire to ask concerning the business to which I am devoting most of my efforts.  Now, will you kindly tell me, why I should clutter up my mind with general knowledge, for the purpose of being able to answer questions, when I have men around me who can supply any knowledge I require?”

The lawyers did not succeed in their intent to prove Mr. Ford an ignorant man.  Every person in the court realized that it was the answer of a man of education.

The same can be said about your company; you’re the president of your company and your business coach can advise you about which steps to take to manage and grow your business.

Trying to do it all can indeed ruin your business. Instead of spreading yourself thin, focus on choosing a niche, defining your brand identity, seeking guidance from a coach or mentor, and building a team of advisors. Remember, multitasking may seem efficient, but it can lead to burnout and decreased productivity in the long run. By prioritizing strategic decision-making and delegating tasks to experts in their respective fields, you can set your business up for sustainable growth and success.
